I completely admire those people who have a gift to take care of our world's elderly. My sister and her husband are currently living with my grandfather. In the past few years Grandpa's mental capabilities have been declining little by little as the signs of dementia creep into his behaviors. There's definitely something to be said for in home elder care in Portland.
Life has been getting harder and harder for my sister as my grandpa is getting more easily confused and disoriented.
It was somewhat laughable when Grandpa blamed her and her husband for the disappearance of his sugar free ice cream. Everybody except for Grandpa realized that he was the one that had finished off the carton.
The next week he couldn't figure out how a twelve pack of soda ended up in his trunk, and again, the rest of the family tried to humor him instead of trying to explain to him that he had put the soda there himself.
While events like this are disheartening, our family tries to look on the bright side, and just kind of laugh off these interesting situations that are becoming more and more common. Sadly, recent changes in Grandpa's situation haven't been as easy to handle.
Grandpa recently had surgery done on both of his eyes. When my sister went to a follow up appointment the doctor said that he didn't think Grandpa had even been getting his prescription eye drops into his eyes for the past week.
His eyes were extremely inflamed, and with that my sister took on the responsibility of putting Grandpa's eye drops in. He has several sets of drops that have to be inserted into his eyes with specific amounts of time in between each application. It's taken over her life.
Not only has that, but the stress of the surgery and the eye drops really affect my grandfather. He's getting confused and disoriented a lot more than he ever has before.
Recently my mom took him shopping, and when she brought him back to her house he stood in the driveway and told her that he didn't know where he was. This was a really scary comment considering that he usually goes to my mom's house several times a week.
Our whole family is grateful for my sister's willingness to help my grandfather in so many ways. This whole experience has completely opened my eyes to the importance of good quality elder care in Portland.
