Apple issues second anti-malware patch

Apple has now issued the second software update this week in order to patch the vulnerability in Java software that allowed the malware to spread to up to 600,000 Mac computers.

Intego, maker of Mac security software, said?the malware, known as Flashback, has "changed greatly from its first incarnation. Initially a fake Adobe Flash installer (hence the name Flashback), it later changed to?impersonate a Software Update dialog, before using?Java vulnerabilities?to install."

Once installed, the malware can be used by criminals to steal personal information, including passwords.

Intego said that as of Thursday, "all of the servers that were providing the Flashback malware seem to be off-line; this is likely to do the activities of the many security companies that have worked on exposing this malware and the servers it uses. However, the command and control servers are still active, so those Macs that are infected are still vulnerable to data theft and more."

Besides, the firm said, it is "likely that this malware will be back in another guise in the future. But for now, the most important thing users can do is make sure that they update Java ? as well as apply any other security updates that they haven?t installed yet ? to be protected in case the Flashback servers come back online."

Mac users can get Apple's security fix by clicking on Software Update in the Apple menu. ?The fix applies to those using Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and OS X 10.7 Lion.

Apple issued a first fix earlier this week, then updated that fix Thursday. Said Intego:

It is possible that Apple discovered a minor glitch in the first update, necessitating a new release. It seems that this update is only available for Lion, whereas the first update was for both Snow Leopard and Lion.

In any case, it is essential that all Mac users apply this update. The Flashback malware has been very active in the wild, and can install with no user interaction, if Java is not patched.

If you're not sure whether your Mac is infected, security firm F-Secure has instructions on how to find out if you do and how to remove the malware.

Sophos Security, another maker of Mac security software, suggests users consider disabling Java, or removing it entirely. (Java should not be confused with Javascript, a commonly used Web programming tool.)

"Most Mac users don't need Java to work and surf in the year 2012," the company says, and points users to a video showing how to remove it.

Psychological Sabotage and Monetary Decision Making: Self ...

file0001052648856

At one time or another everyone makes an unsound decision. We can improve our decisions by examining what led us in the wrong direction, which often leads us to discover that it?s our own psychological sabotage which led us astray. In other words, if we increase self-awareness by examining our decisions, then sounder decisions will ensue. Sounds pretty simple, but it requires understanding the underpinnings of our psychology. Were these faulty decisions based on buried habits? Family matters? Past mistakes? Do we use mental short cuts or set our goals too high or too low? Do we draw on examples that don?t really apply to us?

All of these elements effect our decision making process. And in regard to monetary decision making, they can cause over or under confidence, create social pressure, and cause us to act in an economically self-sabotaging way, causing guilt and even shame. We don?t take the time to understand our goals and our feelings, and we let unpleasant feelings or circumstances pull us in a direction that may not be the best.

Money is an area of life that?s often stressful. We need more, we have too little, we want more, we can?t reign in our spending, we have unexpected expenses, our investing is made with too little awareness or on impulse. We procrastinate on assessment of options, or we don?t follow through. Self-awareness will help us to attract wealth and financial stability, by allowing us to analyze and recognize our financial goals and stop ourselves from over or under reacting.

A good example of psychological sabotage is the volatile stock market. Investors over-react, sell or buy impulsively. Acting first and thinking later can be a financial disaster.

Self-awareness is based on understanding and analyzing our needs and desires, and then taking action rather than procrastinating, in order to achieve them. Our beliefs stimulate and effect our actions.

In regard to monetary self-sabotage, the best way to avoid it is to look at the psychological reasons we may not believe you can succeed. Do you think it?s impossible or difficult to attract wealth? Do you believe that all decisions should be made without weighing the options and consequences? Are you all about the moment, with little regard to the future? And of course, why do you feel this way? Did a parent or sibling tell you that you weren?t ?good? with money? Do you feel unworthy of having investments? Does it seem too ?hard? to understand the ins and outs of investing or the fluctuations in the marketplace? Most importantly of all, what do you really want to achieve this year, and how are you going to make that happen?

Becoming self-aware in regard to monetary decision making means you?ll need to ask yourself these questions, in financial terms.

Instead of justifying your limitations, set up an action plan. Write down your financial goals, and review them, consistently. Seeing where you are within the framework of reaching financial goals will effectively excise the sabotage. You can?t be organized and focused and at the same time be unaware of any negativity that you?re bringing to the financial table.

Setting goals for your financial future will also help you to overcome procrastination and be more productive, too. Making decisions based on clear thinking will follow.

In empirical terms, this kind of self-awareness and goal setting will help you to stop spending too much and saving too little, or conversely, clinging to a small nest egg instead of investing prudently, or thinking outside the box in regard to business and financial goals.

Sure, it?s easier to fall into the same old self-sabotage traps, and tell yourself it?s too difficult to make an informed decision or plan your financial future. But long term, you?ll see goals realized and monetary peace of mind.

Mississippi on way to being 'abortion-free' state?

Rogelio V. Solis / AP

Terri Herring, an anti-abortion activist, holds a photograph of a women's clinic in Jackson that performs abortions, at the Capitol in Jackson, Miss., on Tuesday.

By James Eng, msnbc.com

A bill passed by Mississippi lawmakers putting new restrictions on doctors performing abortions moves the state one step closer to becoming ?abortion free.?

There is only one abortion clinic in the state, and the owner, Diane Derzis, has said the bill?s requirements could force it to shut down.

?It looks dire for them,? said Leola Reis, vice president for external affairs for Planned Parenthood Southeast.

The bill, which passed the state Senate on Wednesday, would require doctors performing abortions to be board-certified OB-GYNs and to have admitting privileges at a local hospital in case a woman undergoing an abortion needs to be immediately hospitalized. The House previously passed the bill, and after a comment period it goes to Republican Gov. Phil Bryant for his expected signature.

Derzis, owner of the Jackson Women?s Health Organization in Jackson, told The Associated Press that while all doctors on her staff are certified OB-GYNs, only one of them has admitting privileges to a local hospital. The clinic's doctors live out of state and hospitals usually don't grant such privileges to non-Mississippi physicians, she said.

Derzis has previously said that she would go to court to challenge the bill if it becomes law.?We're not going to leave the women of Mississippi high and dry,? she told Reuters on Tuesday.

Supporters of the bill have made it no secret they would like to see the state?s sole provider of abortions shut down.

?These are strong, common-sense pro-life bills that will not only end abortion in Mississippi but will enhance efforts to protect children from abuse,? Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves said?in a statement Wednesday.

Bryant, the Republican governor who prides himself as a backer of ?traditional values,? also hailed the Senate passage.

"This legislation is an important step in strengthening abortion regulations and protecting the health and safety of women. As governor, I will continue to work to make Mississippi abortion-free," he said in a separate statement.

Dr. Beverly McMillan of Jackson, a retired OB-GYN who in 1975 opened the first abortion clinic in the state but later came to oppose abortions, says anyone performing an abortion should have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. (Admitting privileges are an arrangement whereby doctors can?refer patients to a hospital?if further treatment is warranted).

"If you're going to do outpatient surgery that has the possibility of injuries, you should have a quick route to get those patients into a hospital,? McMillan, who is now an officer of the Christian organization Pro-Life Mississippi, was quoted as saying Tuesday at the state Capitol by the AP. ?And if you're a decent doctor, you'll be the doctor that admits them and takes care of their complication."

Critics say the bill is misguided and endangers the health and safety of pregnant women rather than ensuring it.

Reis, of Planned Parenthood Southeast, noted Mississippians last year rejected a statewide ?personhood? referendum that would have defined a fertilized egg as a person. ?Mississippians believe that this is a level of government intrusion that is completely inappropriate,? she told msnbc.com.

"It's obvious the intention of supporters is that they would like?Mississippi to be an abortion-free state. Their goal?n passing this legislation is to end abortion in Mississippi," said Jordan Goldberg, state advocacy counsel with the Center for Reproductive Rights.

She told msnbc.com that singling out physicians who perform abortions "raises serious constitutional questions." The center has represented the Mississippi clinic in previous legal matters but Goldberg wouldn't comment on whether it would?go to court to try to quash the new bill.

If the state?s sole abortion clinic shuts down, women would have to go to another state to get a legal abortion.

?It really punishes poor women. The cost of travel, the cost of child care, missing work in order to leave the state, really punishes the most vulnerable Mississippians,? Reis said.

Derzis said?the bill is misguided and a waste of Mississippi taxpayer dollars. ?I think it?s very sad when Mississippi has the ranking that it does as one of the poorest states in the nation, if not the poorest, highest in maternal mortality, that we are worried about passing laws that have no bearing on women?s health,? Derzis was quoted as saying by Mississippi Public Broadcasting.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, a?think-tank that works to advance reproductive rights including abortion rights, Mississippi is among fewer than a handful of states that have just one abortion clinic. In 2008, the latest year for which complete figures are available, about 2,770 abortions were performed in Mississippi, out of roughly 1.2 million procedures nationwide.

"Mississippi stands as one of the most restrictive states in the nation with regard to abortion, along with state such as Kansas and South Dakota," said Elizabeth Nash, state issues manager with the Guttmacher Institute.

Kate and William wax figures unveiled at Madame Tussauds

Fans of Prince William and Duchess Kate will now be able to pose for as many photos as they want with the royal couple, since the Madame Tussauds wax museum unveiled its first figures of them on Wednesday. There are three versions of them on display in London, Amsterdam and New York City.

In London, Kate is wearing a replica of the blue Issa dress she wore to announce her engagement in November 2010, while William has on a replica of the Gieves and Hawkes navy two-piece single-breasted suit and Omega Seamaster watch.

No detail has been left out, from Kate?s dimples, diamond and sapphire engagement ring and perfectly coifed brown locks, to William?s thinning hair. The couple were set in front of a gold-trimmed red throne.

"The duchess has been the most requested figure since their engagement so there is a huge appetite to see her," Liz Edwards, public relations manager at Madame Tussauds London, told TODAY.com. "The guests that have been in today have been so excited to see the royal couple, and with it being the Jubilee year we expect visitors from all over the world to come and see them."

Story: How did Kate's first speech stack up to Diana's?

The couple were kept up to date on every stage of the creation process, according to the museum.

?It?s a longstanding and welcome tradition for Madame Tussauds to make figures of members of the royal family and the duke and duchess are looking forward to seeing the coverage from the launch," a royal spokesman told TODAY.com.

In New York, the couple is featured in the clothing they wore to the formal BAFTA Brits to Watch event in Los Angeles this past July, with Kate in a lilac, floor-length Alexander McQueen gown, accessorized with a chunky diamond bracelet and nude clutch. William is wearing a tux.

Slideshow: Duchess Kate?s royal style (on this page)

In Amsterdam, the wax Kate wears a replica of the black lace Alice Temperley dress she donned for the premiere of ?War Horse? in London this past January.

A team of artists worked for four months to create the figures, collaborating with the original clothing designers to get every detail just right. Even their heights are exact. But perfection doesn?t come cheap: Each figure costs around $300,000 to make.

A fourth set will be unveiled later in April at Madame Tussauds Blackpool in northwestern England, with Kate in a pastel and metallic Jenny Packham dress from her appearance at the ARK charity dinner.

"We know our guests are going to relish the opportunity to get up close to them and join them in celebrating their first wedding anniversary later this month," Edwards said.

As in life, the rest of the royals aren?t too far. At the London museum, Kate and William are surrounded by the queen and Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Harry, Princess Diana and Prince Charles and Camilla.

Over the years, the museum has created more than 20 models of the queen, who has sat for the museum?s team of designers six times.

Story: Royal family bonding: Kate getting close to Wills' kin

The figures of William and Kate were unveiled only weeks before heir first wedding anniversary. In the past year, they have seen their popularity both at home in Britain and abroad soar.

They are expected to play a large role in the queen?s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and plan to visit other Commonwealth countries later in the year on her behalf.
