Suspended football coach releases new statement

High school coach, assistants suspended

DES MOINES, Iowa ?

A high school football coach and two of his assistants have been suspended following an incident during a football practice, Des Moines Public Schools officials confirmed Wednesday.

Spokesman Phil Roeder said "Coach Mihalovich and two of his assistants are on suspension due to a school district investigation. Because this matter is pending, we will have nothing further to add until the investigation is complete."

Tom Mihalovich is the head football coach at Lincoln High School. ?This year is his 12th season with Lincoln.

Mihalovich released a statement Wednesday afternoon:

"Yesterday I was given notice of my immediate suspension as head coach of the Lincoln High School football team by the Des Moines Public School District. This decision was unexpected and disappointing. Out of respect for Des Moines Public Schools? processes and procedures, it would be inappropriate for me to make additional comments at this time.

"What I can tell you is that for twelve years I have devoted my life?s work to building a proud and strong football program at Lincoln. I am known to be a tough but fair coach when there is an infraction or when athletes do not follow team rules. I will cooperate fully with the district and Lincoln High School officials and look forward to resolving this matter and returning to Lincoln to finish out a strong season. Until this time I ask that you respect my privacy as well as that of my family and student athletes. Thank you."

Assistant coaches Kevin Johnston and Larry Gamblin were also placed on?administrative?leave.

School officials have declined to comment about what happened during the incident. ?

Roeder said Wednesday afternoon that reports Mihalovich has been fired are false. ?

He said the investigation?process by the school district's human resources department got underway Wednesday. ?Roeder said there is?no set deadline for this process, but the district plans for it to be completed as soon as possible.
