No. Direct mail is not dead, but it has been modified considerably. You?re more than likely thinking that I?m speaking about spam. I personally feel that the worst web marketing mistake that any marketing firm could make would be to send out spam. Have you EVER purchased anything from a spam email? Of course you haven?t; not a soul does! The only people who turn a profit off of spam are the companies that send them out. If you want to excel online, you would be wise to avoid spam like mad.

So, if your online marketing firm endorses spam, you should back off as though your house were on fire. However, there are sensible ways to use email for web marketing without turning to spam. This might come across as a bit of a shock, but any marketing firm that is worth the money you?re paying it can expertly leverage email marketing as a very good direct mail campaign.

First, a bit of a definition, because I feel this is very mandatory so that you can follow what I?m bringing up. Spam refers to completely unwanted emails that are sent to you; they are the junk mail of the online marketplace. You?ve never asked to be sent this mail, nor do you have any cause to click on them. They are, for the most part, truly futile.

However, there also exists a much more effective (and less irritating) manner of email marketing: mailing lists. Think of a mailing list as, alternatively than an unsolicited piece of junk mail as a catalog that you?ve asked to obtain. People use mailing lists, so you can be sure that they at least have a passing interest in what you?re trying to provide. This is the major benefit; since they requested to see what you have they are significantly more prone to buy something for you.

Sometimes the line between the two can turnout fuzzy, and it?s your job to make sure that they remain perfectly distinct. How can you do so? Simple: make each and every email you send out to be absolutely relevant. Never advertise unconnected services. Always add in something that the recipient could want (a sale, coupon, help and advice on a new product, etc.). Finally, check that your title and text all grab attention and have completely perfect spelling and grammar. Doing anything less will set off a red flag and make your entire email strategy worthless.
