SILAO, Mexico (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI urged Mexicans to wield their faith against drug violence, poverty and other ills, celebrating Sunday Mass before a sea of hushed worshippers in a visit that has warmed many Mexicans to a pontiff they often saw as austere.

Many in the crowd said they were gratified by Benedict's recognition of their country's problems and said they felt reinvigorated in what they described as a daily struggle against criminality, corruption and economic hardship.

The pope delivered the message to an estimated 350,000 people against the backdrop of the Christ the King monument, one of the most important symbols of Mexican Christianity. The statue recalls a 1920s Roman Catholic uprising against the anti-clerical laws that forbade public worship services such as the one Benedict celebrated.

"We pray for him to help us, that there be no more violence in the country," said Lorena Diaz, 50, who owns a jeans factory in nearby Leon. "We pray that he gives us peace."

With his first visit to Mexico, the pontiff appeared to lay to rest doubts that he was a distant, cold pope who could never compare to the charisma and personal connection that his predecessor, John Paul II, forged over his five visits to Mexico. Many Mexicans said they were surprised by their depth of feeling for Benedict.

On Sunday, he charmed the crowd by donning a broad-brimmed Mexican sombrero.

"Some young people rejected the pope, saying he has an angry face. But now they see him like a grandfather," said Cristian Roberto Cerda Reynoso, 17, a seminarian from Leon. "I see the youth filled with excitement and enthusiasm."

He charmed them again later Sunday when he was serenaded by a mariachi band and presented with another sombrero at the entrance to the school where he was staying.

"I've made a lot of trips, but I've never been welcomed with such enthusiasm," Benedict told the wildly cheering crowd in off-the-cuff remarks. "Now I can understand why Pope John Paul II used to say, 'I feel like I'm a Mexican pope.'"

Esther Villegas, a 36-year-old cosmetics vendor, said Benedict's image in Mexico has been changed greatly by the visit.

"We saw a lot of happiness in his face. We are used to seeing him with a harder appearance, but this time he looked happier, smiling," Villegas said. "A lot of people didn't care for him enough before, but now he has won us over."

Before Sunday's ceremony, the vast field was filled with noise, as people took pictures with cellphones and passed around food. But as the Mass started, all fell silent, some dropping to their knees in the dirt and gazing at the altar or giant video screens.

In his homily, Benedict encouraged Mexicans to purify their hearts to confront the sufferings, difficulties and evils of daily life. It has been a common theme in his first visit to Mexico as pope: On Saturday he urged the young to be messengers of peace in a country that has witnessed the deaths of more than 47,000 people in a drug war that has escalated during a government offensive against cartels.

"At this time when so many families are separated or forced to emigrate, when so many are suffering due to poverty, corruption, domestic violence, drug trafficking, the crisis of values and increased crime, we come to Mary in search of consolation, strength and hope," Benedict said in a prayer at the end of Mass.

The reference to Mary is particularly important for Mexicans, who revere the Virgin of Guadalupe as their patron saint, and he urged all of Latin America and the Caribbean to look to her for help. "She is the mother of the true God, who invites us to stay with faith and charity beneath her mantle, so as to overcome in this way all evil and to establish a more just and fraternal society."

Benedict's reference to immigration resonated in Guanajuato, which is one of the top three Mexican states sending migrant workers north.

"People leave for the good of their families," said Jose Porfirio Garcia Martinez, 56, an indigenous farmworker who came to the Mass with 35 others from Puebla, another area that has many migrants in the U.S. "For us it's difficult, not seeing them for 10 years, communicating by phone and by Internet."

The archbishop of Leon, Monsignor Jose Martin Rabago, told Benedict at the start of Mass that Mexicans needed a message of hope because they have been living in "fear, helplessness and grief" over the mass killings, kidnappings, extortion and other violence stemming from Mexico's drug trade.

"We know that this dramatic reality has perverse origins which are fed by poverty, lack of opportunities, the corruption, the impunity, the poor administration of justice and the cultural change which leads to the belief that this life is only worth living if it allows you to accumulate possessions and power quickly regardless of its consequences and costs," Rabago said.

Benedict wanted to come to Guanajuato because it was one of the parts of Mexico that John Paul II had never visited during his time in Mexico as pope. In addition, Benedict wanted to see and bless the Christ the King statue.

With its outstretched arms, the 72-foot (22-meter) bronze monument of Christ "expresses an identity of the Mexican people that contains a whole history in relation to the testimony of faith and those who fought for religious freedom at the time," said Monsignor Victor Rene Rodriguez, secretary general of the Mexican bishops conference.

Guanajuato state was the site of some of the key battles of the Cristero War, so-called because its protagonists said they were fighting for Christ the King. Historians say about 90,000 people died before peace was restored. The region remains Mexico's most conservatively Catholic.

While the pope drew a rapturous response from the faithful, his trip has not been without criticism, particularly concerning the church's treatment of children and sexual abuse.

Victims of Marcial Maciel, the founder of the influential, conservative Legionaries of Christ religious order, launched a book Saturday containing documents from the Vatican archives showing that Holy See officials knew for decades that Maciel was a drug addict who sexually abused his seminarians.

One of Maciel's most prominent victims, Juan Jose Vaca, followed up on Sunday with an open letter to the pope decrying the fact that he hadn't met with survivors of those abused by Maciel or other clerics, as he has during earlier foreign trips.

"Today, you are honoring the heroic memory of men who gave their lives in defense of their faith and religious liberty, the Cristeros," Vaca wrote, noting his own father had been a Cristero fighter. "Meanwhile for us, victims and survivors of other atrocities, not a word."

The 84-year-old pope, who will be going to Cuba on Monday, has made no explicit reference to abuse on this trip. But the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the pope's words about the need to protect children from violence referred also to the need to protect them from priestly sexual violence.

Some other victims of Maciel have said they didn't want a meeting anyway because the pope had been head of the Vatican office that received their complaint against Maciel in 1998. It took the Vatican eight years before sentencing Maciel to a lifetime of penance and prayer for his crimes.

The pope did meet briefly on Saturday night with eight relatives of victims of violent crime. Lombardi said it wasn't a sit-down meeting so much as a brief greeting.

Colon Cancer Treament Causes Hardship for Young Patients | Fight ...

Although nearly four out of ten stage III colon cancer patients had serious financial problems during treatment, treatment related expenses were particularly hard on patients under fifty.? After taking all factors into account, young patients were more than fifty times times more likely to experience financial hardship than patients over 75.? Treatment costs drove them to:

• be in debt
• have to borrow money from family or friends
• sell or refinance their homes
• experience a more than 20 percent drop in income

Financial difficulties sometimes led to stopping treatment early despite the fact that nearly all patients had insurance. 5.4 percent skipped treatments and 7.2 percent refused treatment altogether because of financial problems. Young patients were nearly nine times more likely to skip or refuse treatments.

Patients with incomes under $30,000 were six times more likely not to get recommended treatment. Not being able to work because of disability, leave of absence or employment also raised risk of not getting treatment.

Researchers sent questionnaires to 555 stage III colon cancer patients treated in Washington State between January 1, 2008 and March 1, 2010, identified through Cancer Surveillance System, asking them about the financial impact of their cancer treatment. Over half returned the surveys.

Serious financial hardships reported by all patients in the study included:

• 21.8 percent were in debt due to treatment-related expenses with an average debt of $26,860.
• 16.5 percent borrowed money from family or friends, on average $14,144.
• 5.4 percent either sold their home or took out a second mortgage
• 23.9 percent had at least a 20 percent drop in household income

Factors that contributed to financial problems were

• Being younger than 50
• Nonwhite race
• Annual income less than $50,000
• Medicaid or no insurance
• Work disability, leave of absence, or unemployment

People less likely to have serious financial issues were

• Widows
• People insured by Medicare with supplemental insurance
• Retirees

Veena Shankaran and her colleagues concluded,

A significant proportion of patients undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy for stage III colon cancer may experience financial hardship, despite having health insurance coverage. Interventions to help at-risk patients early on during therapy may prevent long-term financial adverse effects.

They also wrote,

Future research should focus on exploring the impact of various financial experiences on quality of life and identifying specific factors that contribute to financial hardship. Interventions should be developed to help at-risk individuals before they face financial ruin.

Hard to believe that it wasn?t so long ago that fastpitch softball was a game played by kids for the ? wait for it ? fun of it. Sure, there were a few adults around regularly in the form of coaches and umpires, and parents would regularly come out to see them play if they weren?t working. But it wasn?t life-and-death, with every player?s future prospects for a good education apparently hanging on the result of every pitch. All that seems like some sort of pastoral dream, like a Norman Rockwell painting of America as we always imagined it should be. Today parents seem to be way too wrapped up in their children?s athletic endeavors.

Some are unabashed boosters/braggarts for their kids. You never want to be cornered by them lest they start to regale you with tales of Lindsay?s might line drive, or the diving catch Erin made in center field, or the 13 Ks Alice racked up in her last appearance in the circle.

Still, they?re relatively harmless. The ones who are of real concern are the ones who go the other way ? fitting former Vice President Spiro Agnew?s description of ?nattering nabobs of negativity.? Unlike the boosters, these parents only see their kids? failures ? and they make sure their kids hear about so they?re ?inspired? to improve their performance the next time. That?s a category that, as a parent, you definitely don?t want to fall into. Yet it seems to come naturally to some. Perhaps they don?t realize how they sound (or look, because they?re usually scowling). Perhaps they think they?re setting high standards for their kids. But the fact is nothing can take the enjoyment out of an activity like an adult you trust ? like a parent ? telling you how bad you are at something.

And believe it or not, adults, kids know when they?ve screwed up.Instead of harping on it or replaying it, the best thing you can do is put an arm around her shoulder and let her know that home run or strikeout, no hitter or pulled early, she?s still your daughter and you still love her. Spend as much time talking about what she did right as what she did wrong ? maybe more ? and you?ll be surprised how her performance actually improves. After all, no one really performs at their best with a gun to their head. Especially when a loved one is holding it.

There?s plenty of negativity already in the world. We see it around us every day, in the news and sometimes in our own lives. Don?t add to it, and don?t make negativity a part of something that should be bringing your player pleasure. Focus on the positives and support your player no matter what. Even if she never becomes the star you hoped she?d be when you signed her up, the two of you will have a much better relationship for it. She?ll be your daughter far longer than she?ll ever be a softball player.

Payroll Tax Cuts

Many Americans held their breath to see if Congress was going to extend the payroll tax cut at the beginning of this year. While most were happy to hear the cuts would be extended, many risk losing their benefits if these cuts continue. Because payroll taxes take care of a large portion of the funds by which many Social Security benefits are drawn, these cuts have taken quite a sizeable chunk out of an already dwindling pot. The current payroll tax cuts extension allows for employers to pay 4.2 percent in taxes, rather than the 6.2 maintained in previous years. With nearly 9 million Americans depending on Social Security benefits for their survival each month, further tax cut extensions could seriously threaten the future of benefit funds.

Age Requirement Increases

Congress has yet another issue on the forefront of this year?s agenda. There are plans to vote on a potential increase in the age eligibility requirement for some Social Security programs. Unfortunately, this isn?t the first time this has become an issue. While Medicare has kept its age requirement at 65 for the last 50 years, other programs have slowly increased their age limits over the years. If Congress approves an increase to the age eligibility requirement for Medicare and other benefit program it could potentially impact 5.4 million Americans. While boosting the age requirement by two months every year, the government hopes it could save money and help ensure future funds are available. However, critics argue that these increases mean fewer eligible recipients would be reached and less coverage for those in need.

Unemployment Problems

An increasing trend among those struggling to make ends meet has become to jump from unemployment benefits to disability benefits. Because unemployment benefits only last for a specified period of time, more people are flooding the Social Security offices with disability applications in hopes of securing financial assistance. This is a very concerning issue among the government decision heads and those who legitimately qualify for, and need, such benefits. As of now, the government can do very little to prevent the unemployed from applying for benefits. At best, we can only rely on the benefits screening process to weed out those who neither qualify for, or need, such benefits. Until something else is done, true applicants will be forced to wait longer for their benefits as the Social Security Administration sorts through thousands of backlogged applications.

Pregnant women need not worry about cellphone use

"Mums-to-be warned exposing babies in the womb to mobile phones 'could give them behaviour problems'," reported British newspaper website Mail Online yesterday. "Mobile phones could damage unborn babies, researchers claim," said its compatriot The Telegraph.

For any pregnant woman these headlines could cause quite a shock. In fact, both are misleading.

The headlines stem from a new study into the effects of radiation exposure on unborn mice. It is certainly true that the study, published in Scientific Reports (DOI: 10.1038/srep00312), found evidence of hyperactivity and anxiety in mice born after this kind of exposure. Newborn mice are not necessarily a good model for newborn babies, though. And more importantly, pregnant women are incredibly unlikely to be exposed to the high dose of radiation that would be equivalent to what was given to the mice in the experiment.

The study exposed 33 pregnant mice to radiation from an active cellphone above their cage. The phone was set on a permanent call for 17 days, which is almost the mice's full gestation period.

The researchers compared the behaviour and brain activity of pups born after such exposure with that seen in pups born to mice that were not exposed to cellphone radiation. The "cellphone" pups showed signs of hyperactivity, anxiety and poor memory not seen in the control group.

Is this finding relevant to pregnant women? One of the researchers on the study - Hugh Taylor, from Yale University - apparently thinks it is. He is quoted in several articles saying he believes that mobile phones might be "partly responsible for rising rates of behavioural disorders such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder".

Other researchers are not so sure. Eric Taylor, a child psychiatrist from the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London, says that "much more care" is needed when extrapolating directly from mice to humans. He adds that the radiation dose in the experiment was large, and the "researchers' tests of animal memory should not be directly equated to human attention [because] different species can react differently".

Katya Rubia, also from the Institute of Psychiatry, goes further. She says that the link made between mice and humans is "alarmist and unjustified".

How do we know they said this? Because Taylor and Rubia's comments appear in the Telegraph and Mail articles, respectively - beneath those sensational headlines.

Scientific research happens in order to gain an understanding of a larger problem, and it is often justified to report on such work and its potential implications for humans. But when we as reporters receive - and print - so much criticism of a new scientific paper, shouldn't we make more effort to reflect that criticism in our headlines?

Mobilization of the workforce commenced on March 12, 2012 and mining and milling activities are being ramped up. Full production is expected to be reached in the second quarter of 2012.
