Sanctions squeeze forces Iran to cut oilfield flow

LONDON (Reuters) - Tough Western sanctions are forcing Iran to take drastic action and shut off wells at its vast oilfields, reducing production to levels last seen more than two decades ago and costing Tehran billions in lost revenues.

Iran struggled to sell its oil in the run-up to the European Union ban on July 1, yet it managed to sustain oilfield flows at lofty rates above 3 million barrels per day (bpd) by stashing unwanted barrels in tanks on land and on ships in the Gulf.

But oil sales have now slumped to half the rate of last year and storage is running out. As a last resort, Tehran is carrying out "enforced" maintenance at its ageing reservoirs, say Iranian and Western oil sources, dropping output below 3 million bpd.

It's a step that could make Tehran look as if it is caving in to the West and, in any case, leaves it trailing former rival Iraq in the ranks of the world's top oil producers. And if a big volume of oil is closed down, it will be difficult to bring it back online when it's needed, say Western oil experts.

"We're now in a situation where we are being forced to reduce production - so we will prolong the rehabilitation of our oilfields," said an Iranian oil source, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the information.

"But it's a mistake to think this will make us put our hands up. Iran will not surrender."

Nor will Iran say very much, if anything. Oil sales began to slow in March due to the rigorous restraints imposed by the United States and European Union, but Iran only conceded in June that exports had fallen significantly.

As for lower production, an inevitable result of a sustained slowdown in exports, the Islamic Republic has gone further into lock-down mode - making it exceedingly difficult to obtain precise information.

"In operations - upstream or downstream - maintenance is not something unexpected," said an Iranian oil official, who insisted on anonymity. "It is very normal to have some maintenance."

He declined to comment on whether Iran had taken the opportunity to work-over its oilfields with exports now running about 1 million bpd below last year.

Western oil experts reckon tight storage and plunging oil sales may have forced Tehran to turn down the oilfield taps by at least several hundred thousand barrels a day.

"I would guess that (oilfield) shut-ins will be more than 25 percent - if not already, then very soon," said a European oil executive whose company has invested in Iran.

Adding a further layer of complexity, there are changing faces among the top brass at the National Iranian Oil Co. (NIOC). On the job for just a year, Mohsen Qamsari, head of international affairs, has just been replaced by Mohammad Ali Khatibi, Tehran's representative on OPEC's governing board.

"The pressure is definitely on, but it's difficult to know the details," said a senior Western oil executive. "What is clear is that the situation is extremely complicated and delicate and things are not being said in public."

EXPORTS FALL

Oil shipments have declined steadily as buyers cut imports to comply with U.S. and European Union sanctions imposed due to concerns the country is attempting to build a nuclear bomb. Iran says its nuclear activities are peaceful.

Last month, Iran acknowledged that exports had fallen sharply - down 20-30 percent from normal volumes of 2.2 million barrels daily.

A National Iranian Oil Company official, Mohammad Ali Emadi, put the decrease down to oilfield maintenance and not sanctions imposed on Iran's nuclear program.

When pressed for further details on the oilfield overhauls, three senior Iranian officials declined to comment. There is no end of speculation among Western executives and policy-makers.

"I have heard that some fields are shut in and just by looking at the numbers, I believe that's correct. I don't think they have much more space to put oil," said an industry source who tracks Iranian production and exports.

"But I am sure they don't want to admit it or give away any ideas on which fields."

In April, shipping sources said Iran had been forced to deploy more than half its fleet to store oil at anchorage in the Gulf, equating to 33 million barrels. The country is expected to store at least a further 8.3 million barrels this month.

Those who track the oil shipments of Iran and other members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries say there is precious little available storage in tanks onshore.

"It's full up. It got full quite quickly before the floating storage started getting filled up," said the industry source.

LONG-TERM DAMAGE?

While oil industry experts say that shutting in production is beneficial to Iran's hard-worn reservoirs, a prolonged closure of high volumes would not be desirable.

"The more production is shut in, the harder and longer it is to bring back production when it is needed," said Peter Wells of geological consultancy Neftex Petroleum.

Iranian engineers have been battling for years to get the best out of Iran's oilfields, for decades deprived of easy access to cutting-edge technology designed to maximize flows due to successive rounds of U.S. sanctions.

Output from Iran's ageing fields has slumped from 3.9 million bpd in 2005, according to OPEC, as recovery rates are relatively low due to Western restrictions on technology transfers needed to counter production declines or tap trickier discoveries offshore.

Iran is meanwhile dipping deep into savings to fund investment in its energy industry, while increasing its refining capacity for the home market, reporting giant new oil or gas finds, and even touting investment in renewable energy as a possible solution to dependence on oil.

On July 3 - two days after the EU embargo on Iranian oil took effect - Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for his ministry to tap the National Development Fund, a sovereign wealth fund largely filled with oil revenues accumulated in better days, for $14 billion.

The fund, now valued at around $35 billion, is the successor of a fund set up in 1999, when oil was below $10 per barrel, to save money for a rainy day.

Qasemi said the move "indicates that the country has enough financial resources to fund projects". The ministry will also issue bonds to raise cash.

The government could be in for a long haul.

"There is an increasing desperation," said a Western oil executive. "It seems very unlikely they will get any relief from sanctions any time soon."

Doxo

Online social networks, notably Facebook, centralize our virtual interactions with friends and family. Financial management apps, such as Mint.com , act as hubs for personal finance. A new type of app that builds on this same premise of centralization is the online family organizer, a one-stop shop for household management. Among the newcomers in the space is Doxo (free), a website that lets you back-up important family documents, manage household payments, and connect with utility and service providers.

While Doxo is off to a strong start in helping shape what online family organizers will be, it acts a little too much like a filing cabinet and not enough like the matriarchs and patriarchs who have traditionally managed families by keeping important information about people in their heads. It's the people part that's missing. There are no options in Doxo for simply listing the people in the family and associating information or documents to them. So while you can upload your marriage certificate, there's no shared calendar for reminding your spouse of your upcoming anniversary. Connect a healthcare provider's information to your Doxo account, and you can see statements regarding hospital visits, but you can't associate them to, say, your son.

Another such service, AboutOne (beta) (free, 3 stars) has the opposite problem. It's well-thought out in how it handles people, but doesn't support payments and bills. In some sense, it's less useful than Doxo, though, because at least with Doxo you have a reason to log in frequently?to keep an eye on your bills?and therefore you'll use the site more. With AboutOne, I could easily imagine setting up an account, filling in important information, and then forgetting all about it in two or three months. And while I wouldn't classify the family tree and genealogy website Ancestry.com as a family organizer, it does have a lot of the same features, including the ability to record important details about family members and upload family documents, keepsake photos, and more.

When you set up an account in Doxo, it takes several measures to help keep your documents protected. First, every login consists of a username, password, security question, and security image. Each stage of a login occurs on a new screen, too, a tougher system for hackers to crack. And because it was founded by a team who had a background in monetary security, Doxo treats every file you upload to it as it were money. It's very secure.

The site contains some pre-populated sections, particularly for connecting with service providers, but you can create your own folder structures, too. You can name the sections whatever you want to store, for example, copies of your medical history, your last will and testament, or paperwork related to your job. I do wish more suggestions came with the account, though. Seeing how other people use Doxo might have given me more ideas beyond what I could think of by myself on the spot. I'd love to see a list of common folder names or some other suggestion mechanism.

One neat feature in the billing and services area is the ability to set a price-limit on bills that autopay. If a payment exceeds a certain amount, Doxo will alert you and require you to authenticate and approve the bill before it's paid.

Online family organizers are still in their infancy, and while I like where Doxo is heading with its free service, I would like to see it include more areas for storing information about people. Family first.?

NBC in talks to buy Microsoft stake in MSNBC site

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? NBC News is negotiating to buy Microsoft's portion of MSNBC.com, potentially severing a joint venture that begin nearly 17 years ago.

An NBC News spokeswoman said Wednesday by email that "conversations are taking place" but "there is no deal."

Microsoft declined to comment.

The deal would break up a venture first announced in 1995. Back then, Microsoft Corp. said it would invest $220 million for a 50 percent stake in the MSNBC cable channel and its website.

The TV partnership dissolved in 2005 and NBC acquired a majority stake. But the sides continued to share ownership of MSNBC.com, a popular news website.

Although the MSNBC TV channel has become known as a politically left-leaning counterpart to Fox News, the website offers more straightforward news from various sources.

Jawbone Jambox gets Android app support, semi-ironic silent mode

Jawbone Jambox review

Those who bought the regular Jawbone Jambox have had to look on at Big Jambox owners with envy over the past several weeks for more than just the obvious: the larger model was the only one to support the Android version of the Jawbone Companion app and give audible reminders of distinctly non-audio tidbits, such as Google Calendar appointments. The software side of the gap is now closing through a version 2.2 update to the original Bluetooth audio brick. Along with adding in that missing Companion support, there's now a slightly misleading silent mode -- it's just turning off audible control cues and voice prompts, not turning the speaker into a paperweight. If these and minor tweaks like subtler volume tones strike your fancy, the Jambox update is ready and waiting.

Using Video Marketing For Your Business | Mehak Naheem Online ...

For anyone that knows me or is following me online, I am sure you have probably come across at least one of my videos. The reason being that video marketing is a huge segment of my marketing strategy and something which I thoroughly enjoy doing. Video is fun with music and effects, you can express yourself a lot better than text and people will probably engage with you much more. By having videos people can see who you are, what you act like and look like rather than seeing a picture online somewhere. Also I love video marketing because you can show your personality so people who are following you can see the real you. They will get to see it?s not just someone hiding behind a fake profile, (which does happen online) and over time you get to build a relationship with your followers through video updates. video marketing

One of the secrets to my success, building multiple six figure businesses online is with the help of video marketing. There you have it! Without video I possibly could not reach out to as many followers and build that connection because of the reasons above. By having my video shared on so many websites all over the world, it means that I could work with global clients. You see the major website where I recommend everyone to upload your videos for maximum exposure has to be YouTube. The reason being that YouTube is now working together with Google and both companies are owned by the same people, as far as I know. Meaning, when your video gains exposure on YouTube you can bet Google will also show it too! Google is the number one search engine in the world at the time of writing this information and YouTube is the number one most viewed video website but YouTube is also the third most visited website in the world. From what I gather, these are huge facts for someone who wants to promote a business.

Video Marketing vs Traditional Marketing

Another point I would like to highlight is that just because these websites are obviously types of online marketing, it is not to say at the least that you cannot promote an offline business such as a shop or service using the internet too. Actually nowadays, marketing costs are getting lower for businesses using online marketing and they are gaining more exposure with better results. Simply by switching to online methods such as video marketing. Traditional marketing methods like newspaper adverts, television adverts, postcards, billboards, flyers etc they do work however the costs have gone higher, where as conversion levels are lower. I mean, when was the last time you went in the local paper?s advertisement section to look for something to buy? Most people simply Google or YouTube it! Do we not look at leaflets in the post and simply recycle or bin them?

Video Marketing Coming Naturally

Personally my videos are where I talk and pass on information or share some news with my followers however I have to admit that it definitely does not come naturally. I look back at some old videos now and cringe, what was I thinking! However, I see that as a positive because now that my knowledge has grown about video marketing I can see what I did wrong and how to improve this. It would be worrying if I was continuing to shoot videos which were not fulfilling their job- to get me more exposure and build my business. Yes, I can also remove the videos and just keep all my updated new videos but the way video marketing works is although that one video which I do not like is on YouTube for me, during the period of its uploaded life it has probably been distributed to many other video sharing websites. So in the back end I will be getting people viewing what I have to say and possibly getting in touch to work with me. Therefore personally I do not mind having my previous work online because if anything, people who are smart will be able to see a difference in my old and more recent updated videos. So as long as I am giving value through my videos my followers and I will be happy.

One of the turnoffs to people who are new to video marketing is probably being on camera and having to be this great presenter all of a sudden. I would like to point out that especially for a business- you do not have to be on camera! Yes, that is correct, some of my videos are actually shot in a presentation method where people just get to see my screen as I talk. It?s great to start off and build your confidence if you are new to video marketing. It took me lots of practice to feel comfortable on camera and the other reason I present myself in videos is because I am my brand. However, for other businesses their brand perhaps isn?t the founder or a person so others can get away without someone talking on a camera.

Also a video presentation may be great for an offline business who provides services so they would basically just have slides of pictures or snippets of video with a voice or text over the animations. This can easily be created using most computer softwares or you can also get the work outsourced at very cheap rates.

Lastly, please do remember that there are other methods for online marketing in addition to video marketing too. Like any marketing strategy you should never just rely on one marketing method. I recommend having two or three methods and doing them well because this will build your credibility and show your skills. Online marketing has many aspects, some of which I learn daily so it is unlikely that someone will know everything about this industry. This is why I always stress about the importance of having the knowledge and continuing to educate yourself because the more you know, the easier the whole process becomes.
