NFL Picks Week 17: Predictions for Every AFC West Matchup

If the football gods had known better, this weekend would feature the Denver Broncos vs. the Oakland Raiders in a game to decide the AFC West title. Instead we?ll see two games at the same time, 1:00 pm Sunday, to decide the fate of the division.

The Broncos will host the Kansas City Chiefs with the playoffs on the line. A loss by Denver will knock them out of the running for the division title. They would also need help from others to even make the playoffs. While Denver can worry about the playoffs, the Chiefs are playing for their jobs after a disappointing season.

In Oakland, the Raiders host the San Diego Chargers with their own playoff hopes in question. The Raiders need to win and hope for a rare Denver loss to make the postseason appearance they banked on when trading for Carson Palmer.

Who will win this week, and which players are the keys to the games? Watch as B/R lead writer Matt Miller breaks down this week in football for the AFC West.

Gene identified in increasing pancreatic cancer risk

ScienceDaily (Dec. 29, 2011) ? Mutations in the ATM gene may increase the hereditary risk for pancreatic cancer, according to data published in Cancer Discovery, the newest journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most morbid cancers, with less than 5 percent of those diagnosed with the disease surviving to five years. Approximately 10 percent of patients come from families with multiple cases of pancreatic cancer.

"There was significant reason to believe this clustering was due to genetics, but we had not, to this point, been able to find the causative genes that explained the cluster of pancreatic cancer for a majority of these families," said lead author Alison Klein, Ph.D., associate professor of oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins and director of the National Familial Pancreas Tumor Registry.

Klein and colleagues used next-generation sequencing, including whole genome and whole exome analyses, and identified ATM gene mutations in two kindreds with familial pancreatic cancer.

When these initial findings were examined in a large series for patients, ATM mutations were present in four of 166 subjects with pancreatic cancer but were absent in 190 spousal control subsets.

Klein said that knowledge of the presence of the ATM gene could lead to better screening for pancreatic cancer, the fourth most common cause of cancer-related death. However, there are currently no recommended screening tests.

Many doctors use endoscopy as a screening tool for pancreatic cancer, but researchers are still evaluating this technique in clinical trials.

Without Ben Nelson, can Democrats keep control of Senate in 2012?

The decision by Sen. Ben Nelson (D) of Nebraska not to run for reelection in 2012 is a 'blow' to Democrats' efforts to retain their Senate majority, analysts say.?

With the retirement of Sen. Ben Nelson (D) of Nebraska, announced Tuesday, Democrats have yet another open seat to defend in a 2012 election year that could flip control of the Senate to Republicans.

Democrats are defending 23 seats in the 2012 campaign cycle, compared with 10 for Republicans. With Democrats holding a 53-to-47 majority, Republicans need to pick up four seats to wrest control from them. If President Obama fails to win a second term, that threshold falls to three seats, because the vice president breaks tie votes.

?Given that the [Senate] majority is at stake, it?s a blow,? says Jennifer Duffy, senior editor of the Cook Political Report in Washington, of Senator Nelson's decision not to seek reelection next year.

?Nelson was going to face a very tough race, but you couldn?t write him off,? she adds. ?He?s won difficult races before. There?s not an obvious candidate of his stature with the ability to raise money to replace him."

The two-term Nebraskan has been the Senate?s most reliable centrist, at a time when the ranks of moderates in Congress have been diminished almost to the point of extinction.

?Simply put: It is time to move on,? Nelson said in a video statement to Nebraskans on his Senate website.??I encourage those who will follow in my footsteps to look for common ground and to work together in bipartisan ways to do what?s best for the country, not just one political party.?

Often the lone Democrat voting with Republicans, Nelson broke party ranks to vote to extend the Bush-era tax cuts and to oppose legislation that gave some children of illegal immigrants a path to US citizenship. He joined with the so-called gang of 14 to work out a compromise over stalled judicial nominations, averting what was known at the time as the ?nuclear option? to ban filibusters on judges. He?s also the lone Democrat in Nebraska?s congressional delegation.

Without Nelson?s support, Democrats could not have passed Mr. Obama?s health-care reform in 2010 ? one of the president's campaign pledges. Nelson in the end gave Democrats the 60th vote they needed to block a GOP filibuster.

College Football Recruiting: Alabama And Texas Battle For Top Class

Texas and Alabama are the favorites to land the top recruiting class in the country.

Dec 28, 2011 - Entering all-star season, let's take a look at the best recruiting classes in college football.

It's very difficult to declare a winner so far between Texas and Alabama. While other schools have a shot at finishing with the top class, Texas and Alabama are far and away the top two at the moment.

The Longhorns have an excellent class coming to Austin this season. That should be the case pretty much every year for the clear top school in the state of Texas -- and Texas is the name of the game, as 22 of the Longhorns' 25 commitments are from the Lone Star State (22 or 23 high school commitments).

Texas needed a quarterback and grabbed Connor Brewer early in the process out of Arizona. He'll enroll early and take part in Spring practice.

I'm equally impressed with what Texas did on the JUCO circuit, grabbing offensive tackle Donald Hawkins (6'5", 320) and defensive tackle Brandon Moore (6'4", 330) out of Mississippi. Texas hasn't gone after a lot of JUCO kids in recent years, but the 'Horns saw a need and patched it. That's some serious size on the lines for the Horns, which is significant as Texas has been criticized for being soft up front in recent years.

And for good measure, Texas grabbed arguably the best back in Texas in Aledo's Jonathan Gray and the top defensive tackle in the state in Malcolm Brown of Brenham.

Still on the board: Receiver Dorial Green-Beckham and athlete Daniel Brooks (an Oklahoma commitment). Green-Beckham would be an unreal grab by this staff, as Texas is thought to be trailing here.

For more on Texas recruiting, visit Burnt Orange Nation.

Alabama has put together another excellent class and Nick Saban is well on his way to giving Alabama a top-five class for a half decade. Bama has eight skill position players, one specialist, three offensive linemen, five defensive lineman, three linebackers, and three defensive backs.

This is a strange class for Bama in that the Crimson Tide's top players have not received a ton of press in the recruiting community. This is for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being that many of the top commitments committed to Bama early on and never wavered.

Eddie Williams out of Panama City's (Fla.) Arnold High school is a great prospect worthy of his universal five-star rating. At 6'4" and 215 pounds, Williams plans to play safety for the Crimson Tide. How long he can play the position at that size remains to be seen. And really, the uncertainty as to his position at the next level is the only question about his game.

Other Stars: Linebacker Reggie Ragland (6'4", 245) and JUCO cornerback Travell Dixon.

Still on the board: Bama is still very much in the running for the services of defensive tackle Eddie Goldman out of Washington, DC. Goldman is thought to be between the Tide and the Florida State Seminoles, with Auburn and perhaps Miami on the outside looking in. And the Tide is hard charging for Florida State QB commitment Jameis Winston, who is also a serious baseball prospect.

For more on Alabama recruiting, visit Roll Bama Roll.

Then there are a few other teams with excellent classes who, if the chips fall in their favor, could snag the top spot.

Fresh off grabbing quarterback Gunner Kiel, LSU is squarely in the hunt. Kiel gives the Tigers a top signal-caller to go with a wealth of defensive talent, including cornerback Dwayne Thomas and defensive end Danielle Hunter. The Tigers are expected to add top safety Landon Collins to the mix as well. If they add defensive end Mario Edwards, Jr. (currently committed to Florida State), they have a shot at number one.

For more on LSU football recruiting, visit And The Valley Shook.

Brady Hoke's first year at Michigan really could not have gone any better, as the Wolverines scratched and clawed their way into a BCS game. Off the field, things have been even better. Hoke is trying to transition Michigan away from the spread offense and into a more traditional pro-style offense. That mean selling playing time.

So far, recruits are buying what Hoke is selling -- especially offensive linemen. Kyle Kallis and Erik Manguson are two blue-chip tackle prospects, while Ben Braden, Caleb Stacy and Blake Bars have impressive offer sheets as well. And the Wolverines aren't done, as they continue to chase more top offensive linemen.

Polk Audio UltraFit3000

Polk Audio is a familiar brand name when it comes to speakers, but recently, the company launched its first line of headphones, and interestingly, they are all exercise-focused models. At $99.95 (direct), the Polk Audio UltraFit3000 is affordable, offering respectable audio performance and the secure fit required for gym earphones. Its design features a twistable, moldable "SecureFit" over-the-ear support piece and a wide assortment of differently-shaped and sized eartips, as well as iPhone controls built into the cable. With generous bass response, given its cost and size, the UltraFit3000 offers a generally solid audio performance, but at maximum volume, expect a very slight-but-forgivable amount of distortion on deep bass songs. While the fit is secure, there is an issue with ear-to-ear consistency that ultimately holds the UltraFit3000 back a bit.

Design
The Polk Audio UltraFit3000 is offered in three color schemes: white-and-orange, black-and-red, and the color scheme of our test unit, white-and-gray. The aforementioned "SecureFit" ear piece extends from the eartip that enters your canal and goes over the top ridge of your outer ear, tucking behind it. The cable extends from the end of the support tip and terminates at?about mid-chest. You have three cable options to attach at this termination point, the primary option is a longer (41-inch), flat-style cable (think: linguini) similar to the Monster Beats by Dr. Dre Tour High Resolution In-Ear Headphones ($149.95, 4 stars) cable. This cable comes with the built-in Apple three-button controls that operate playback, volume, menu navigation, and call answering. The second cable is a mere 14-inches, and is designed for minimal slack when using an MP3 player tucked into a shirt pocket or attached using a shirt clip. And a third cable is roughly 5-inches long and intended for tiny, shirt collar-attached players. Also included with the UltraFit3000: seven differently-sized and shaped eartip pairs, a shirt clip, and a soft zip-up pouch. The overall fit of the earphones is quite secure and excellent for the gym, but there are some inconsistency issues, from ear-to-ear, that we'll address in the next section.Polk Audio UltraFit3000 inline

Performance
On tracks with deep bass, as noted earlier, the UltraFit3000 sounds great at moderate-to-loud volumes, but begins to distort slightly at maximum volume when using an iPhone or laptop as your sound source. For instance, the Knife's "Silent Shout," a song with very deep bass, made the UltraFit3000 distort slightly at max volume, though not enough to really knock the earphones for. At reasonable volumes, on tracks with deep bass or not, the Ultrafit300 sounds fantastic, especially given the price. If you're the type to exercise to orchestral music?congratulations on your originality, by the way?you'll find the UltraFit3000's response rewarding, adding a nice resonance to the lower frequencies of the percussion and stringed instruments, while maintaining clarity in the mids and highs, in James Horner's?Star Trek II?film score. Bill Callahan's guitar work on?Apocalypse?sounds bright without being invasive, and the same treble presence lends itself nicely to the gravelly edge of his rich baritone vocals.?

One gripe: The moldable fit makes it possible to favor one ear over the other in terms of volume. The fit was always secure, for sure, but the over-ear support piece can press the driver of one ear more intensely against and into your canal than the other. It can be a bit difficult to achieve consistent fit from ear-to-ear, regardless of how incredibly secure the fit is, and this can mess with the stereo images by making one ear appear to be receiving more volume than the other. After some fiddling, this issue can be resolved, but not everyone will enjoy fiddling with them while jogging.

If absolute secure fit is your number one priority, the UltraFit3000 is not a bad option, but if you have a little more money to spend, the Editors' Choice Bowers & Wilkins C5 In-Ear Headphones ($179.95, 4.5 stars), though not specifically designed for exercise, are the most secure-fitting earphones we've ever tested, and they sound fantastic too.? In the realm of exercise earphones, another Editors' Choice, Sennheiser's CX 680 (now $89.95, 4 stars) is, at this point, an old standby in the category?the sweat-proof and secure-fitting result of a partnership with Adidas. They also happen to be washable?you can rinse them in running water?and they sound pretty excellent, especially for their price, which was lowered substantially recently. In short, the UltraFit3000 is an affordable earphone option, ideal for exercise?especially if you use an iPhone or iPod while you workout, but its minor fit and distortion issues hold it back from a slightly higher rating.

French court convicts ex-Pres Jacques Chirac of corruption

Jacques?Chirac, a savvy world diplomat and icon of France's ruling establishment for decades, will not go behind bars but was handed a two-year suspended sentence that goes on his criminal record. Anti-corruption crusaders, long frustrated by dirty dealings in the French political machine, rejoiced at the conviction.

A French court found former President Jacques?Chirac?guilty of embezzling public funds to illegally finance the conservative party he long led, in a historic verdict Thursday with repercussions for his legacy and France's political elite.

Chirac, a savvy world diplomat and icon of France's ruling establishment for decades, will not go behind bars but was handed a two-year suspended sentence that goes on his criminal record. Anti-corruption crusaders, long frustrated by dirty dealings in the French political machine, rejoiced at the conviction.

He's the first former French head of state to face prosecution since the World War II era. But the 79-year-old former leader did not take part in the trial, after doctors determined that he suffers severe memory lapses.

The court said Thursday it had found?Chirac?guilty in two related cases involving fake jobs created at the RPR party, which he led during his 1977-1995 tenure as Paris mayor. He was convicted of embezzling public funds, abuse of trust, and illegal conflict of interest.

Chirac?repeatedly denied wrongdoing. It took years to get him to trial because he enjoyed immunity from prosecution during his 1995-2007 presidential tenure, during which he led France into the shared euro currency and became the global champion of opposition to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

The court said it took into account his age, health and status as a former head of state when determining the light sentence.

Unusually, the prosecutor had requested that?Chirac?and the nine other defendants in the complex two-part case be acquitted, saying not enough evidence proved intentional corruption. The court disagreed, saying his guilt results "from long-standing and reiterated practices" of illegal party financing.

Chirac's?adopted daughter fought back tears as she lamented the ruling.

"The justice system has been very severe, but this is a fair and independent justice system. For the family, it's a great pain we have to accept," said?Chirac's?adopted daughter Anh Dao Traxel, her voice cracking with emotion as she spoke to reporters outside the courtroom.

"I think this decision is too, too severe for him and our family has more than ever to show solidarity and be supportive, for his health for the rest of his life," said Traxel, a former Vietnamese boat person.?Chirac?and his wife formally adopted Traxel after she came to Paris in 1979.

Chirac?spokeswoman Benedicte Brissart declined to comment immediately, saying time was needed to go over the decision.

Chirac?lawyer Georges Kiejman called the ruling disappointing and said he expected a decision later Thursday on whether?Chirac?would appeal.

"We have to take a step back and read this ruling, we have to speak of course with the main person involved (Chirac), and we will know tonight if he accepts this decision," Kiejman said. "What I hope is that this ruling doesn't change in any way the deep affection the French feel legitimately for Jacques?Chirac."

The ruling is certain to bruise?Chirac's?public image. Leaving office in 2007 did wonders for his popularity: while polls showed that he was unpopular in his final years as president, those numbers soared afterward ? and even today, the avuncular former leader, who now focuses on charitable work, has been one of France's most popular public figures.

Critics had pushed for years to see?Chirac?answer charges of illegal party financing, frustrated by his presidential immunity and a sense that the political machine would never let the sensitive trial come to pass.

Jerome Karsenti, a lawyer for the anti-corruption group Anticor, which had argued against?Chirac?as a civil party to the case, said the reverberations could be widespread for France's political elites.

"This is a strong message from the court ? a message to all politicians of responsibility. It's also proof of a mature and transparent democracy that is today able to make a distinction and try a former president," Karsenti said.

"I see it as a historic and very important decision for the future of French democracy," he said.

The latest baring of France's underworld of back-room cronyism, corruption and political wrongdoing could loom large in voters minds as the French cast ballots in presidential and legislative elections next year.

The party that succeeded the RPR, President Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP party, and the opposition Socialist Party have seen their share of scandal recently. Two longtime Sarkozy allies have been targeted since September in a case of suspected kickbacks in a 1990s French defense deal with Pakistan. Sarkozy served as budget minister at the time, but his office and allies insist he was not involved.

In Thursday's ruling, the court found that 19 totally or partially fake jobs were created to benefit?Chirac. "The case and the debates established that Jacques?Chirac?was the initiator and principal author of crimes of abuse of trust, embezzling and illegal conflict of interest," the ruling said.

A career politician,?Chirac?was a debonair master of the workings of public office. He modeled himself after longtime French leader Charles de Gaulle and was nicknamed "Le Bulldozer" early in his career for his determination and ambition.

France's last leader with memories of World War II,?Chirac?was the first to acknowledge the nation's responsibility for the deportation of Jews during the Holocaust. But he struggled to achieve reforms to the regulated economy and failed to defuse tensions between police and minority youth that exploded into riots in 2005.

Fitch: comprehensive euro zone deal "beyond reach" (Reuters)

ROME/BERLIN (Reuters) ? The credit rating agency Fitch said on Friday it thought a comprehensive solution to the euro zone's debt crisis was beyond reach, putting six euro zone economies including Italy on watch for potential near-term downgrades.

It reaffirmed France's top-notch triple-A rating but even here said the outlook was now negative, meaning it could be downgraded within two years.

Underscoring the tensions within the bloc over a crisis that has spread relentlessly over the past two years, Italy's prime minister urged European policymakers to beware of dividing the continent with their efforts to fight its debt crisis.

In a swipe at Germany, he warned against a "short-term hunger for rigour" in some countries.

Germany has led resistance to allowing the European Central Bank to ramp up its buying of government bonds on the open market to a big enough scale to douse the crisis, but Fitch added to the pressure for just such a move.

Fitch said that following the EU summit a week ago it had concluded that "a 'comprehensive solution' to the eurozone crisis is technically and politically beyond reach."

"Of particular concern is the absence of a credible financial backstop," it said. "In Fitch's opinion this requires more active and explicit commitment from the ECB to mitigate the risk of self-fulfilling liquidity crises for potentially illiquid but solvent Euro Area Member States."

It put Belgium, Spain, Slovenia, Italy, Ireland, and Cyprus on negative watch, which could mean a downgrade within three months. Later another agency, Moody's, downgraded Belgium's credit rating by two notches, and said a further downgrade was possible within two years.

Standard & Poor's had already warned 15 of the currency bloc's 17 members they were close to a downgrade.

"The systemic nature of the euro zone crisis is having a profoundly adverse effect on economic and financial stability across the region," Fitch said.

The euro edged higher against the dollar but still suffered its worst weekly performance against the greenback in three months.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel gained some respite from domestic pressure to take a tougher line in the euro zone crisis when eurosceptics in her junior coalition partner, the Free Democrats, who are hostile to more bailouts lost a grassrooots party referendum aimed at blocking a permanent rescue fund.

A victory for the eurosceptics could have brought down Merkel's centre-right coalition, but the outcome still left the FDP split, with its public support in tatters.

Meanwhile, a first draft of a planned fiscal compact among euro zone countries and aspiring members, published on Friday, showed that countries could be taken to the European Court of Justice if they fail to meet agreed budget targets.

AUTOMATIC SANCTIONS

Merkel - under pressure from the revered Bundesbank to force debt-saddled euro zone countries to reform and save their way out of crisis with austerity measures - has led a push for automatic sanctions for deficit "sinners" in the bloc.

This has fed concerns that excessive belt-tightening in southern countries could send their economies into a negative spiral with no prospect of growing out of crisis, while feeding resentment in the prosperous north.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said Europe's response "should be wrapped in a long-term sustainable approach, not just to feed short-term hunger for rigor in some countries."

"To help European construction evolve in a way that unites, not divides, we cannot afford that the crisis in the euro zone brings us ... the risk of conflicts between the virtuous North and an allegedly vicious South," he told a conference in Rome.

French officials have sought to prepare the public for the likelihood that Paris will lose its top-notch rating from S&P for the first time since 1975, playing down the potential setback and focusing attention instead on neighboring Britain.

"The economic situation in Britain today is very worrying, and you'd rather be French than British in economic terms," Finance Minister Francois Baroin said in a radio interview, a day after Bank of France Governor Christian Noyer said that if ratings agencies were even-handed, Britain deserved to be downgraded before France. [ID:nL6E7NG1KU]

Britain's Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said French Prime Minister Francois Fillon had called him to explain that "it had not been his intention to call into question the UK's rating but to highlight that ratings agencies appeared more focused on economic governance than deficit levels."

Clegg's office said he accepted the explanation "but made the point that recent remarks from members of the French government about the UK economy were simply unacceptable and that steps should be taken to calm the rhetoric."

World Bank President Robert Zoellick said he was "deeply troubled" by the exchanges.

He said politicians needed to be careful because "you've got a tinderbox out there in both political and economic terms."

Euro zone officials said potential downgrades, particularly from S&P, could raise the cost of borrowing for the region's existing EFSF bailout fund, but would not make a big difference to its operations.

EFSF FIREPOWER

EFSF chief Klaus Regling told the Rome conference about 600 billion euros was available to fight the crisis.

"If Italy and Spain were to ask for support, their gross financing needs for 2012 are less than that and I don't think they would need to be taken off the market," he said.

The EFSF has the option of providing first-loss insurance on new bond issues, but the country concerned would have to make a formal request and negotiate conditionality, while the sum guaranteed would have to be agreed unanimously by EFSF members, subject to German parliamentary approval. [ID:nR1E7GD02J]

Euro zone countries will hold talks next Monday on the draft text of the euro zone fiscal compact and on bilateral loans to the International Monetary Fund, officials in Brussels said.

Slovak Finance Minister Ivan Miklos told Reuters they would commit 150 billion euros to boost the IMF's lending capacity. [ID:nL6E7NG3T8]

The United States has refused to offer additional funding and it remains to be seen how much non-European economies such as China, Russia, Brazil and India are willing to commit.

The European Central Bank has resisted calls to embark on unlimited purchases of euro zone sovereign bonds to quell the debt crisis, putting the onus on governments and their collective financial firewalls.

ECB President Mario Draghi said on Thursday that euro zone governments were on track to restore market confidence and the ECB's bond-buying plan was "neither eternal nor infinite."

But in one intriguing hint on Friday, Bank of Italy governor Ignazio Visco told the Rome conference: "The impression is that there is only one way to convince markets, and we'll work on that." He did not elaborate.

Banks appear to be resisting pressure from governments to come to the aid of debt-choked euro zone countries by using cheap money lent by the ECB to buy more sovereign bonds.

The chief executive of UniCredit, one of Italy's two biggest banks, said this week that using ECB money to buy government debt "wouldn't be logical."

With euro zone governments needing to sell almost 80 billion euros of fresh debt in January alone, the stand-off between policymakers and banks could turn the slow-burning debt crisis into a conflagration in the New Year.

In Greece, where the debt crisis began two years ago, a senior official of the EU/IMF troika team negotiating terms for a second bailout package said there was no guarantee that talks on the private sector's contribution would lead to a voluntary deal involving the bulk of its creditors.

Agreement has been held up by wrangling over issues ranging from the credit status and interest coupons on the new bonds to legal guarantees to be offered by the official sector. Another key question is how many sign up to a private sector debt swap.

Failure to secure agreement could force a disorderly default that might trigger a wider emergency across the euro zone.

Asked if there was a risk of a disorderly Greek default, the troika official said: "Our objective is still to have a voluntary operation. If you ask me 'Is there a guarantee that there will be a voluntary operation?', of course there can never be a guarantee."

Peru judge grants Berenson NY holiday

(AP) ? A Peruvian court has ruled that paroled U.S. activist Lori Berenson and her toddler son can travel to New York for the holidays, she and her father confirmed on Friday.

A three-judge appeals court on Wednesday overturned a lower court judge's ruling denying Berenson permission to travel, said Guillermo Gonzalez, spokesman for Peru's judicial system. He said she could leave the country from Dec. 16 to Jan. 11.

"I'm very glad that Peru is respecting its laws and human rights," Berenson's father, Mark, told The Associated Press by phone from Manhattan. "As Lori says, if she doesn't come home, let Interpol arrest her."

"She is not trying to ever break the law again," he added.

If she doesn't return to Peru by Jan. 11, the country's government could seek her extradition and return her to prison for violating parole, Gonzalez said.

Lori Berenson was paroled last year after serving 15 years for aiding leftist rebels, but she cannot leave Peru permanently until her sentence ends in 2015.

Her father said he is "petrified" a negative local reaction to the New York visit could prevent the trip, including celebrating his 70th birthday Dec. 29.

"My worry is that there's going to be screaming to stop this," he said. Some Peruvians consider her a terrorist, opposed her parole and have publicly insulted her on the street.

He said that as far as he knew, his 42-year-old daughter was still trying to buy a ticket for herself and son Salvador, who is 2 1/2.

"It's not going to be easy," he said. Flights are heavily booked and prices high at this time of year.

Reached by the AP, Lori Berenson confirmed her court permission but added by text message: "I am not speaking to the press."

She has been repeatedly hounded and mobbed by Peruvian news media, which has occasionally frightened young Salvador. Last month, one TV channel obtained her new address and showed video of her home on television, her father said.

"It was very dangerous," he added. "The (U.S.) Embassy complained."

"It's just not fair to Salvador or to her," he said. "They used her like she's a celebrity and she just wants to be a low-profile person and get on with her life and be a good citizen."

He said he would appeal to President Ollanta Humala to send his daughter home.

Humala could by law commute her sentence but has not indicated whether he might do so. The AP sought to reach a presidential palace spokesman for comment but its calls were not immediately returned.

Lori Berenson is separated from Salvador's father, Anibal Apari, whom she met in prison and who serves as her lawyer. He told the AP he signed documents letting her travel with the child.

Mark Berenson said his daughter is looking forward to seeing relatives she hasn't met since her 20s, including his 96-year-old aunt, and that he wants his grandson, who loves trees, see the New York Botanical Garden's holiday display.

Since her initial parole in May 2010, Lori Berenson repeatedly regret for aiding the rebel Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement.

Arrested in 1995, the former MIT student was accused of helping the rebels plan an armed takeover of Congress, an attack that never happened.

A military court convicted her the following year and sentenced her to life in prison for sedition. But after intense U.S. government pressure, she was retried in civil courts in 2001 and sentenced to 20 years for terrorist collaboration.

Berenson was unrepentant at the time of her arrest, but softened during years of sometimes harsh prison conditions, eventually being praised as a model prisoner.

Yet she is viewed by many as a symbol of the 1980-2000 rebel conflict that claimed some 70,000 lives. The fanatical Maoist Shining Path movement did most of the killing, while Tupac Amaru was a lesser player.

Berenson has acknowledged helping the rebels rent a safe house, where authorities seized a cache of weapons. But she insists she didn't know guns were being stored there. She denies ever belonging to Tupac Amaru or engaging in violent acts.

In an interview with the AP last year, Berenson said she was deeply troubled at having become Peru's "face of terrorism."

Its most famous prisoner, she also became a politically convenient scapegoat, she said.

Lindsay Lohan as Marilyn Monroe: Would You Hit it?

The cover and contents of the highly anticipated Lindsay Lohan Playboy issue leaked early, forcing Hugh Hefner & Co. to bump up its release date to this coming weekend.

As a tease, the first of many Lindsay Lohan Playboy pictures from inside the publication has judy been released, showing the star channelling her inner blonde bombshell.

In the promo photo below, the 24-year-old emulates Marilyn Monroe as she reclines with her dyed, white blonde hair resting on her shoulders, arm behind her head:

A Lindsay Lohan Playboy Photo

With her red glossy lips parted, Lindsay - who says posing for Playboy and embracing sexuality is part of nature - is seen pouting and staring seductively into the camera.

Some fans are likely feeling short-changed right about now. Not just because LiLo did the Marilyn thing before (see N.Y. Mag, 2008), but because she's arguably hotter as is.

Seriously, the wig, the lipstick, the airbrushing, the fake eyelashes, all the "classic Marilyn" poses ... does anyone care? If you're clamoring to see Lindsay Lohan nude at all, wouldn't you want to see the ginger in all her fiery, freckled glory?

It's a fair question. As is this, more general one:

PFT: Passengers says Suh lied about Portland crash

Bears v DolphinsGetty Images

Former Raiders and Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden has been the subject of plenty of articles.? Most recently, he served as the subject of a comprehensive profile in The New Yorker.

It?s a lengthy article, and I actually read the whole thing.? Which means it?s good; otherwise, the adult ADD would have kicked in within the first few paragraphs.

Still, something was missing.

The article points out that Gruden routinely is ?criticized for overpraising players? publicly, but also points out that, in private settings, Gruden displays far less charity.

Writes Kelefa Sanneh of Gruden:? ?He is forever judging players who don?t or can?t excel ? ?slapdicks,? he calls them, or, more familiarly, ?slappies.?? A defensive lineman gets shoved back on his heels and collapses, too calmly, onto the turf.? ?He just looks like he?s enjoying this, getting blocked,? Gruden says.? Three receivers run malformed routes, and they all end up in the same throwing lane. ?That?s horrific,? Gruden says.? An offensive tackle dives halfheartedly at the feet of a defender, who leaps over him and knocks down the quarterback. ?I can?t take it,? Gruden says.?

So why the disconnect between the public and private persona?? ?His enthusiasm isn?t meant to fool the fans,? Sanneh writes, ?it?s meant to motivate and inspire them, as if they were players.?

Even if that isn?t a large chunk of baloney (and it probably is), the article overlooks the most prevalent theory regarding Gruden?s homage to Harvey Dent.? Many believe that Gruden fully intends to coach again, and that his ?everyone is the greatest? routine is aimed at ensuring that no bridges are burned, so that he?ll have maximum options ? and leverage ? when he decides to return.

It?s clear he?ll return.? ?I miss it a ton,? Gruden told Sanneh.? ?In some ways, I can?t believe I?m not a coach.?

And I can?t believe that a lengthy profile of Gruden was written without pointing out the possibility that his lack of authenticity in the broadcast booth flows from that desire to return to the sidelines under the best possible conditions.

Gruden was at it again on Monday night, chiding on-air partner Ron Jaworski for being ?the most negative guy I?ve ever met? after Jaws expressed an opinion that the Chargers won?t turn around their current 4-7 record.? Gruden then proceeded to apply his lips to the buttocks of Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, rattling off Rivers? record in the months of December and January and eventually encouraging him to tune out ?negative people? like Jaworski.

It makes sense.? With the Chargers reportedly poised to fire Norv Turner, there?s a chance that Gruden will be Rivers? next head coach.

Cyber Monday Kicks Off Record $6B Online Holiday Shopping Week Thanks To Free Shipping Offers

comConsumers continue to set records with online shopping sales this holiday season. After spending a whopping (and record) $1.25 billion on Cyber Monday, online shoppers continued spending online, with two other days in the past week eclipsing the $1 billion mark in e-commerce sales, bringing the total week's value to $6 billion. comScore reports that Tuesday, November 29 reached $1.12 billion, while Wednesday, November 30 reached $1.03 billion. These three billion dollar spending days currently rank as three of the four heaviest online spending days in history (with Cyber Monday 2010 being the other). To date, $18.7 billion has been spent online this holiday season, a 15 percent increase from the same period last year. So what is the reason why more consumers are spending online? comScore says that free shipping is one major factor many shoppers are considering when paying for presents this holiday season. This incentive, says the data research company, is being used at record levels over the first few weeks of the holiday season.

Pippa Middleton to Join William and Kate For the Holidays

Kate Middleton and Prince William will spend the holidays together with both of their families, and her sister Pippa will be invited to the royals' Boxing Day retreat, to boot!

The 29-year-old Duke and Duchess will spend the actual holiday with William's family, but the entire week before will be spent with her sister Pippa and the Middletons.

Pippa, 27, will then join her big sister for Boxing Day (Dec. 26) in Sandringham, Norfolk, where the royals hold an annual pheasant hunting competition. Lock and load!

Kate Middleton, FigureSo Pip

"It will be the first Christmas Catherine is away from her family, so having Pippa come on Boxing Day is just part of making [Kate] feel comfortable and for her to share the holiday with her own family," an insider said. "It's something William wanted."

Nice guy, that Will.

Kate, William and Pippa "will then all travel together back to Bucklebury and spend the remaining days of Christmas with the other Middleton family members."

In early 2012, William will be deployed to the Falkland Islands for six weeks. He'll join a Royal Air Force crew as part of his training as a Search and Rescue pilot.

Hopefully Pip can keep Kate Middleton company then, as well.

Penske Racing splits with Kurt Busch

(AP) ? Kurt Busch and Penske Racing parted ways Monday after six bumpy seasons, a split that clouds the former champion's future in NASCAR as he embarks on a personal journey to reclaim his passion for racing.

Both the team and driver said ending the relationship was a "mutual agreement," but most believe Busch was fired in the fallout of yet another embarrassing incident. A fan caught Busch on video verbally abusing an ESPN reporter during last month's season finale, and Busch was fined $50,000 by NASCAR after the clip was posted on YouTube.

Busch, though, was insistent leaving Penske is probably the best thing for him personally and seemed at peace during an interview with The Associated Press.

"What's troublesome is this five letter 'f-i-r-e-d' word is being used, but it's obvious to me that looking back, I was very unhappy over the second half of the season," Busch told the AP.

"I need to put the fun back into racing for me. I want to be a better driver and a better person. Today is the day that begins. I take a deep breath, I smile, and I move forward from here."

Busch admitted last week during activities surrounding the season-ending awards ceremony that he began seeing a sports psychologist about two months ago to address what he called "personal issues."

Known for both his intensity and notorious meltdowns during in-race communications with his race team, the 2011 season was particularly brutal for Busch.

Although he won two races and made the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, he had an epic tantrum over his in-car radio at Richmond in May that set the tone for the season. He feuded with rival Jimmie Johnson and openly struggled with an ability to keep his competition with Johnson in perspective.

Busch also had at least three public flare-ups with media members, Steve Addington became his second crew chief to quit in three years, and he was overshadowed on and off the track by Penske teammate Brad Keselowski. He also became publicly annoyed over interest in his ongoing divorce and new relationship with Patricia Driscoll, head of the national charity the Armed Forces Foundation.

His behavior wore thin on the buttoned-up Penske organization, which signed Busch away from Roush Fenway Racing a year removed from his 2004 Cup championship. Busch said after reflecting during the Thanksgiving break, he came to realize he maybe just isn't Penske material.

"I'm not sure I was the best fit," he admitted. "My frankness and my intensity, it didn't play the way I intended it to. It didn't fit."

Busch won 10 Cup races and made the Chase four times since joining Penske in 2006. Bud Denker, senior vice president for Penske Corp., seemed puzzled by Busch's assessment of his fit with the organization.

"We thought he did a terrific job for us on the track, and there is no better driver who hits the marks, relative to sponsors and understanding the brands, then Kurt," Denker said. "He was admirable. I never saw him as a bad fit, so those are his thoughts."

Denker was also quick to stress that Busch was not fired and the split came after weeks of discussions about concerns both sides had regarding the direction of the organization. Busch has always been outspoken about how he believes things should be done, and regardless of his incident at Homestead with ESPN reporter Dr. Jerry Punch, both sides had been moving toward a split.

"Was the Homestead situation the reason he left? No. We had our concerns and he had his, and it was time for us to separate," Denker said. "I think we've done it mutually and above board. It was not a firing. We did not fire Kurt Busch.

"We said 'here's where we are going in the future, Kurt, and we talked to our sponsors and they concurred with us."

Shell, primary sponsor of the No. 22 Dodge, said in a statement it supported the decision.

"Shell and Pennzoil utilize our motorsports program to gain technical knowledge for our products and brands and to promote them to consumers in a positive way," the statement said. "Moving forward we will continue to work with the team at Penske Racing and to evaluate the best options for our motorsports program."

Denker said discussions began in earnest Monday on a replacement for Busch, and the team had been contacted by several drivers "raising their hand." Among active Cup drivers available are David Ragan, Brian Vickers and David Reutimann, who all head into 2012 without rides.

There's a deep pool of talent in the Nationwide Series, as well, but Denker said longtime Penske driver Sam Hornish Jr. is not a candidate.

"Our intentions all along have been to run Sam for the Nationwide Series championship next season," Denker said. "We love that plan, NASCAR loves that plan, the sponsors love that plan."

It's also not clear where Busch is headed next. There are no competitive rides available unless a team owner specifically makes room for him, but Busch would not commit in his interview with AP to returning to NASCAR next season.

He peculiarly said he wants to "be remembered as a champion driver" and laughed when asked if that was a goodbye.

Busch has dabbled in NHRA and Street Stock Racing in the past, and said that's where he's found the most joy of late.

"That's where I had the smile on the face," he said. "It reminded me of the beginning days of racing for me."

At 33, Busch has a long racing future ahead of him, and his 24 career victories and 11 seasons have given him flexibility to take his time planning his future. He joked he landed in NASCAR at the wrong time, and that the hard-nosed 1980s era when the emphasis was more on racing and less on sponsorship and off-track issues, was probably better suited for him.

"The '80s were a great decade. I just missed it," he said.

Busch, meanwhile, is the older brother of Joe Gibbs Racing driver Kyle Busch, who also spent the last month of the season in turmoil. An annual title contender, he was suspended by NASCAR in early November for intentionally wrecked Ron Hornaday Jr. under caution in a Truck Series race at Texas.

NASCAR also fined Kyle Busch $50,000, and the driver had to fight to save his seat in the final two races of the year when sponsor M&M's balked at letting him race. No decision has been formally announced regarding Kyle Busch's participation in Nationwide and Truck races next season, although M&M's indicated it will continue to sponsor him in Cup.

Taylor Armstrong, whose personal family tragedy has overshadowed the second season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (which was shot before husband Russell Armstrong committed suicide in August), has signed a memoir deal with Simon &Schuster, E! News confirmed Friday.

How did we ever think that wouldn't happen, right?

RHBH RECAP: Russell Armstrong's therapy session reveals anger and neglect

Armstrong is expected to delve into what she has since described as her physically and emotionally abusive relationship with Russell and her current mission to educate and help other victims of domestic violence.

The publisher tells us the book is due out on Feb. 7.

The Armstrongs' marital problems have taken center stage on RHOBH this season. On a recent episode, divorce Camille Grammer confronted Taylor about getting help during an intervention masquerading as a tea party at Lisa Vanderpump's house.

"I think everyone should start saying what they mean," Taylor said, opening the door for Camille.

"I don't think you want to put everything out there," Kelsey Grammer's ex told her. "You said 'everything.' Be careful saying that. We're all protecting you...About what you told us about your marriage...We don't say that he hit you, we don't say that he broke your jaw or that he beat you up...We don't say that, but now we've said it."

Taylor had filed for divorce in July. She has repeatedly denied that she's seriously dating again and has said that she's focusing on her daughter, Kennedy, and her charity work.
